Double Roller Blinds: The Ultimate Day/Night Privacy Balance
How double brackets, sunscreen meshes, and blockout backings deliver precision light control for modern layouts.
1. The Double Roller Concept: Dual Bracket Engineering
Modern window layouts face a constant conflict between the need for natural daylight and the requirement for absolute privacy. A single roller blind forces you to choose between the two. A sheer sunscreen blind lets in light during the day, but at night, it becomes fully transparent from the outside when interior lights are switched on. A blockout blind provides complete privacy but blocks all natural light during the day.
Double Roller Blinds solve this conflict by mounting two separate, independent blind rollers onto a single, high-strength dual bracket. The front roller (facing the room) carries a sunscreen fabric featuring an open weave (typically 2% to 5% openness). This sunscreen layer filters harsh daylight, blocking up to 95% of damaging UV rays to protect your timber floors and furniture from fading, while still preserving your view of the outdoors. The rear roller carries a heavy-duty blockout fabric. Lowering the blockout blind seals the window, delivering absolute night-time privacy and complete darkness, making it the perfect addition for bedrooms, nurseries, and home media rooms.
2. Sunscreen Fabrics: Protecting Floors and Furniture
Direct Australian sunlight is highly destructive to interior finishes. Constant exposure to solar UV radiation degrades wood flooring, breaks down fabric upholstery, and fades expensive artwork. Sunscreen roller blinds utilize high-durability woven mesh fabrics engineered to filter solar rays before they enter your rooms.
These fabrics feature openness ratings ranging from 2% to 5%. A 2% openness mesh provides higher UV protection and glare control, making it ideal for north-facing windows that receive intense sun. A 5% openness mesh provides slightly clearer views of the outdoors. Sunscreen blinds reduce glare on TV screens and computer monitors while preserving natural light and views of the garden.
3. Blockout Fabrics: Sleep Optimization & Privacy
At night, privacy and light blocking are the primary concerns. For bedrooms and media suites, our blockout roller blinds feature multi-pass woven linings or triple-weave fabrics. Rather than using stiff, rubber-backed fabrics that peel over time, we use modern woven multi-pass linings or triple-weave face fabrics. These fabrics feature a middle layer of black yarn that absorbs 99% of light, remaining incredibly soft and flexible.
| Sunscreen Openness Option | UV Blocking Rate | Daytime Privacy Level | Glare Reduction Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2% Openness Screen Mesh | 98% UV Blockage | High Privacy (Slightly obscuring views) | Maximum (Perfect for TV Rooms) |
| 3% Openness Screen Mesh | 97% UV Blockage | Moderate Privacy (Balanced) | High Glare Reduction |
| 5% Openness Screen Mesh | 95% UV Blockage | Low Privacy (Excellent outward view) | Moderate Glare Reduction |
| 100% Solid Blockout Screen | 99.9% Light Block | Absolute Privacy (Day & Night) | Total Glare Blockout |
4. Inside vs. Outside Architrave Installation
The decision to install double roller blinds inside the window architrave (recessed) or outside (face-mounted) depends on your window depth and design preferences. An inside mount keeps the blinds flush with the wall, creating a neat finish. However, double roller brackets require a minimum window casing depth of 100mm to 120mm to fit both rollers comfortably.
If your window frames are shallow, face-mounting the brackets outside the architrave is the best alternative. Face-mounted blockout blinds are also highly effective at minimizing light leakage around the sides, as the fabric overlap extends beyond the window frame.
5. Chain Operation vs. Automated PowerView Motors
Manual double roller blinds utilize dual chain controls made from stainless steel or color-matched plastics. To ensure safety, all manual chains are anchored to the architrave with child safety tension devices, preventing hazards.
Motorized roller blinds eliminate manual operating chains completely, creating a clean, cordless environment. We integrate quiet tubular motors from Somfy and Becker. These motorized systems can be operated using a remote control, smartphone apps, or via voice commands integrated with home automation hubs. 6. Layout Planning for Multi-Room Suburbs
For properties in high-density areas like Surry Hills, Paddington, and Newtown, double roller blinds are ideal for managing privacy and light. Matching the sunscreen and blockout fabric colors to your walls creates a clean look, while custom textured fabrics add depth to your spaces.
